This page is intended to be a catch-all for all the different ideas and things that might be looked into at some point or are in process
We have all seen this happen. Just recently Mike Roy saw a young couple with a baby darting across PCH. Horrifying. Not sure what can be done to minimize this especially on that long stretch where some vehicle speed tends to really build up.
There was a construction project on Dumond for about a month that had a porta-Potty as many constructions do. Trouble was that it was never locked. This ended up being a significant tourist attraction on the weekends. All of a sudden, our beach has "facilities". In addition, it was on a hill, our street, right down to the beach as they all are. Sure enough, it got tipped over one night and it all does in fact run down hill.
ACTION ITEM: Work with the city to ensure that construction facilities near tourist areas are mandated to be locked when not in use for construction.
ACTION ITEM: Work with the city to have some type of requirement that these not be placed on a slant and have appropriate landing they are anchored to or some such thing to prevent tip-overs and spillage that is uncontrolled down to the beach.
There is a flaw in the municipal code that says that drones are legal when over the water. Well, that is just dumb. They have to be launched and recovered from land so it should inherently still be illegal and besides, that doesn't help anybody one bit who lives on a bluff above the ocean
ACTION ITEM: Work with the city to have a more meaningful code relating to drones.
It would be helpful if the trolleys had information to help people chose the right beach with the right facilities. If they need close loading zone access, need bathrooms or water, etc., help them find a beach that better suits those requirements and everyone wins!
ACTION ITEM: Work with the city to look into some type of information on what is available where for the beaches.
ACTION ITEM: Right now there are 2 stops for Victoria. One at Rockledge/Victoria, one at Sunset. It has been suggested that it would be more efficient and a better flow to just have the one stop at Victoria. Thoughts?
Man, I hate to facilitate that name but what else do we call it? Anyway, the thought is to work with social media and mapping sites, public visitor and area promotion entities (city, state) to eliminate the use and reference to that stairway. It is private property and should not be used to promote anything.
Fiona has been attempting to get to Google Maps as a start and talk to the city visitors/promotional bureau. It will take time.
Fairly contentious but a valid consideration: What about putting parking meters in all along PCH? It could be a significant source of funding to go back into the city and preferably into our neighborhood.
And a lot of residents are also feel that this would be a big problem for them because they use the spots or their friends do. It would pretty much mean you need to invest in a parking permit, etc.
Something to think about over time.
Believe it or not, this is not entirely impractical. The city did check into these directions. The Coastal Commission said no but the reason was that there is some city code that restricted the consideration.
These are public beaches but that does not mean that the public must have vehicle access to the streets. In fact, these streets were built as residential streets and have no design aspect relating to being a major tourist avenue.
ACTION ITEM: Investigate how these ideas might be made possible, see what steps can be made in those directions. As the path becomes clearer, we can work together to figure out what we might want to do if we have some of those options.
Make sure we have appropriate information about parking, loading zones, facilities, NO COMMERCIAL activities around the corner, etc.
ACTION ITEM: Work with the city to develop that as needed.
Wow, those sure looks like a lot of fun and very cool but my god are those annoying!! And they have been seen repeatably flying within 10 feet directly overhead of swimmers and people on the beach. Fun as they probably are, having them fly right by at eye level (those on the bluffs) with that volume of noise and really obnoxious fumes is not acceptable.
I've thought many times about getting down the coast a bit when they are flying and tracking them down. Nothing that has risen to the top actionable priority (except at the moment they fly by....) but we need some information on what regulates these guys and finding a way to move that further away from our homes and beach.
ACTION ITEM: Figure out where they come from
ACTION ITEM: Find out how they are regulated and who can enforce the regulations, follow up on it.
Question has been raised about maybe turning a couple of the car spots into several golf cart spots. Much to be considered and discussed on that. Probably same question on the electric bikes.
ACTION ITEM: Put this into the mill overtime, figure out what the possibilities are and see what we want to do
We could certainly use more enforcement on the beach, more time on the sand. A lot has been happening lately. We are looking into increased parking patrols including spending amounts of time specifically at the ramp and stairs so the Beach Patrol might be able to be helped in the same direction.
I have seen them down on the beach much longer, more thorough sweeps and in general, more frequently than in the past. Going in the right directions but we do need a lot more.
ACTION ITEM: Follow up over the summer as we see if we can get more parking enforcement, see how that works out, etc. and build on it.
